About SafeSuburb

Making official SAPS crime statistics genuinely useful for everyday South Africans.

SafeSuburb helps property buyers, renters, parents, and new residents access crime data in a readable, suburb-level format. We take official SAPS Excel spreadsheets and make them searchable, visual, and mobile-friendly — so you can make informed decisions about where to live, work, and raise families.

Why we built this

Crime is a top-of-mind concern that materially affects major life decisions. But accessing meaningful crime data is genuinely difficult:

1SAPS publishes data in Excel spreadsheets by police precinct — not by suburb name, not searchable, not mobile-friendly.
2Existing solutions either paywall publicly available data or cater to researchers rather than consumers.
3General searches return stale blog posts, forum opinions, and estate agent marketing copy.

Our approach

100% free

No paywalls, no premium reports, no subscriptions.

Official data only

All crime statistics come directly from SAPS quarterly releases.

Transparent methodology

Our data sources and methods are fully documented.

Updated quarterly

New data incorporated as soon as SAPS releases each quarterly dataset.

Responsible framing

Raw counts with year-on-year trends, and clear caveats about reporting limitations. We never sensationalise or editorialize the data.
